Windows 11 Virtual Desktops Failing to Load After Sign-in

Microsoft has acknowledged an issue in its Windows 11 operating system where some virtual desktops fail to load after signing in, leaving users staring at a black screen.

The problem affects devices running the August 2026 non-security preview update or later releases and is most commonly seen on Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) hosts using FSLogix.

Windows Explorer crashes may appear in the affected device's Application event log, and users can temporarily recover their desktop by launching Task Manager and running explorer.exe as a new task.

A Known Issue Rollback (KIR) has been issued that administrators can deploy through Group Policy to disable the offending change until a permanent fix is released.

Microsoft says it is working on a resolution for this issue, which will be included in a future Windows update.
