Windows Licensing Fees Skyrocket Amid Chip Shortage

Microsoft's recent move to raise Windows 11 licensing fees is set to make PCs even more expensive for consumers. The company has increased its average annual fee increase to 7-10% starting in July this year, with some brands experiencing much higher hikes.

This development comes on top of the ongoing memory chip shortage, dubbed 'RAMageddon,' which has been causing PC prices to soar. According to a PC brand executive who spoke anonymously, Microsoft's licensing fee increases vary by processor type, with more powerful devices seeing bigger jumps in fees than lower-end models.

The increased costs are already affecting current PC prices, as most Windows laptops and desktops come pre-installed with their operating systems. However, pricing for individual Windows 11 licenses remains unchanged.
