Windows Recall Feature Raises Concerns: Users Find Ways to Disable It

Microsoft's Windows Recall feature has raised privacy and security concerns among users who prefer to maintain strict control over their system data. This feature, designed exclusively for Copilot+ PCs equipped with Neural Processing Units (NPUs), periodically takes local snapshots of active user screens to index past digital activity.

For users operating on Windows 11 Home or Pro, there are four methods to pause, disable, or remove Windows Recall using built-in options. However, it's essential to note that when updating the system, Windows Update might turn Windows Recall and other features back on.

The standard Settings app provides the fastest route for most users who want to stop snapshot collection without modifying deep system configuration files. Users can locate the Save snapshots toggle in Privacy & Security settings and switch it to Off. Disabling this toggle immediately halts new snapshot recordings, while deleting prior snapshots frees up local storage space.

Users can also uninstall the optional system component, Recall, from Windows Features by pressing Windows Key + R and typing optionalfeatures.exe. This process strips underlying feature files from active execution, ensuring background indexing services remain dormant.
