Xbox Axes 268 Roles Amid Industry-Wide Gaming Shift
Microsoft's Xbox division is undergoing significant restructuring as part of its 'reset' initiative. In a memo to employees, Chief Content Officer Max Booty announced that the company will be eliminating 268 roles across Halo Studios and other areas. This move comes after the company cut 3,200 workers in July, part of an industry-wide recalibration in response to changing gaming trends.
The layoffs are part of a larger effort by Xbox to reorganize its studios and focus on strengthening its franchises and games. According to Booty, the goal is 'to operate fewer business units, align groups that already work closely together, and focus our publishing expertise.' This move follows Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023 for $69 billion, creating a massive new player in the video game industry.
The gaming sector has been disrupted by trends among gamers and consumers, with large publishers like Ubisoft announcing layoffs. New entrants like Netflix have also had to reconfigure their operations, shuttering studios and stepping back from big franchise bets. Xbox's restructuring efforts aim to address these challenges and position the company for future success.
