Baker Hughes Strikes Key Deals to Boost Venezuela’s Gas and Energy Sector
Baker Hughes has taken a significant step toward revitalizing Venezuela’s energy sector by signing two key agreements. The first is a strategic alliance with PDVSA, Lindsayca, and Fulcrum LNG aimed at expanding the country’s natural gas infrastructure. This partnership focuses on gas processing, transportation, commercialization, and potential exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The second agreement is a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with New Stratus Energy to support future oil and gas development using Baker Hughes’ technologies.
Lorenzo Simonelli, chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes, highlighted that these agreements establish a framework to develop an integrated gas value chain. The goal is to transform Venezuela’s substantial natural gas resources into reliable domestic supply and future export opportunities, including the potential for Venezuela’s first LNG exports. Jesus Bronchalo, CEO of Fulcrum LNG, described the alliance with PDVSA as a historic opportunity to maximize the use and value of Venezuela's natural gas resources.
However, the path forward is not without challenges. Specific projects under the alliance require separate definitive agreements, internal approvals, and compliance with U.S. sanctions and export controls, including authorizations from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Despite these hurdles, the agreements signal a serious commitment to collaboration and potential future growth in Venezuela’s energy sector.
