Bangladesh Ditches Black Sea Wheat for Cheaper Indian Supplies

Bangladesh has resumed large-scale purchases of Indian wheat after a four-year gap due to rising global prices caused by disruptions in the Black Sea region.

The country's importers have booked over 200,000 tonnes of Indian wheat since India eased export restrictions in late August. This marks the first significant purchase from India since 2022.

Before India restricted wheat exports in May 2022, it accounted for nearly 70% of Bangladesh's wheat purchases. The country had turned to suppliers like Argentina, Canada, Russia, and Ukraine after the restrictions were imposed.

The shift back to Indian wheat comes as attacks on grain shipments from Russia and Ukraine have tightened supplies from one of the world's key wheat-producing regions.
