Bangladesh Expands LNG Infrastructure Amid Growing Demand
Bangladesh is expanding its liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure to meet growing demand. The country currently has two floating LNG import terminals, but a new floating storage and regasification unit will be commissioned by 2028 with a capacity of approximately 600 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd). A land-based terminal at Matarbari is also planned for completion by 2030, with a regasification capacity of around 1,000 mmcfd.
The additional requirements are expected to be significant. From 2026 to 2030, Bangladesh will need an extra 3-4 million metric tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG, while the demand is forecasted to increase even more drastically between 2031 and 2040, reaching around 17-18 mtpa.
Bangladesh has been relying on spot imports this year after QatarEnergy declared force majeure on its shipments due to damaged facilities amid the US-Iran war. The country imported nearly 7 million tons of LNG last year, with most supplies coming from Qatar, according to analytics firm Kpler.
