Brent Crude Jumps Amid Strait of Hormuz Uncertainty
Brent crude oil prices surged more than $1 per barrel on Friday amid ongoing uncertainty over negotiations to control and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping artery.
The price of Brent crude futures settled at $83.55 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude finished at $78.18 per barrel. Despite this increase, both Brent and WTI saw significant losses for the week, with Brent falling 7.3 percent and WTI declining 7.7 percent.
The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran and Oman, and negotiations are ongoing to determine control and set fees for ships passing through the strait. Iran is reportedly seeking fees ranging from 5 to 7 percent of cargo prices, while Oman is discussing a 3 percent fee. The US government has expressed opposition to any fees.
The uncertainty surrounding these negotiations has contributed to increased tensions in the region and concerns over supply and shipping risks. This has had a ripple effect on global energy markets, with Asia spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices slipping despite remaining near a four-month high.
