Brent Crude Surges Above $100 as Bond Yields Soar
U.S. futures started October on a mixed note as Brent crude prices rebounded above $100 per barrel, while bond yields saw a significant increase.
Futures for the S&P 500 gained 0.2% on Thursday, whereas those for the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by the same margin. The Nasdaq futures rose by 0.6%
Brent crude, the international standard, increased by 2.1% to $100.10 per barrel, surpassing the $100 mark for the second time in September.
The recent fluctuations in oil prices can be attributed to ongoing uncertainty surrounding the war with Iran and its impact on crude exports. Iranian officials indicated that they have received a response from the U.S. regarding their proposal to end the seven-month conflict, but details were not provided.
Longer-term bond yields are rising due to concerns about growing debt loads in governments worldwide, including the U.S. The 10-year and 30-year U.S. Treasury yields reached levels not seen since 2002 at 5.3% and 5.65%, respectively.
