Canada's LNG Export Terminal Doubles Capacity with $23B Expansion
The multinational owners of Canada's first large-scale liquefied natural gas export terminal, LNG Canada, have agreed to a major expansion. The C$33 billion (US$23 billion) project will double the facility's capacity and make it one of the world's largest LNG terminals.
The expansion, known as Phase 2 of the Kitimat project, will add two LNG processing units, another storage tank, and an additional loading berth. This will increase the terminal's capacity to 28 million tons per year, up from its current 14 million tons. The project is expected to create up to 4,000 jobs at peak construction.
The expansion will also trigger a multibillion-dollar upgrade of the TC Energy-operated Coastal GasLink pipeline, which carries natural gas from Dawson Creek to Kitimat. This upgrade will nearly double the pipeline's capacity and create up to 2,100 jobs at peak construction.
