Copper Prices Set to Soar as Demand Outstrips Supply
The global economy is showing signs of growth, and copper prices are expected to rise as a result. The Global X Copper Miners ETF has already surged 37% over the past year, but experts predict even higher gains in the coming years.
Hyperscale data centers are driving demand for copper, with companies like Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms investing heavily in these facilities. Data center construction is expected to reach $7 trillion by 2030, with each facility requiring up to 50,000 metric tons of copper.
The power grid is also undergoing significant upgrades to meet growing electricity demand, which is projected to rise 2.5% annually through 2035. These upgrades require large amounts of copper for generator coils, collector cables, and transmission conduits.
Copper mine supply is struggling to keep up with demand, as aging mines produce lower-grade ore and new greenfield operations are scarce. In fact, greenfield developments can take 16-18 years from initial exploration to commercial production.
