Diesel Prices Soar Past $6.28 Per Gallon Amid Global Market Disruptions
SIU Professor Warns of Continuing Diesel Fuel and Heating Oil Price Increases
Diesel fuel prices have surpassed $6.28 per gallon, while regular gasoline remains relatively steady at around $4.32 per gallon.
Gregory D. DeYong, an associate professor of operations management in SIU Carbondale's College of Business and Analytics, attributes the rising costs to global market disruptions, which affect U.S. consumers despite the country being a net exporter of diesel fuel.
DeYong explains that 'because so much of transportation utilizes diesel, higher prices for fuel translate to higher consumer prices fairly quickly.' He also notes that diesel is widely used in extraction industries such as mining and farming, affecting supply chains.
