Dutch Central Bank Relocates $12 Billion in Gold to London Amid Geopolitical Tensions

The Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), has quietly relocated 86 tonnes of gold from storage facilities in New York and Ottawa to the Bank of England in London. The transfer, valued between €10 billion and €12 billion, was completed over six months and is now considered a strategic move amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

The operation involved physically transporting more than 27 tonnes via the DNB's facility in Zeist, while the remaining 59 tonnes were sold in New York and repurchased in London to avoid costly smelting and reshipping. This workaround was necessary due to older gold bars not meeting current London market standards.

The relocation has resulted in London now holding the largest single share of DNB's gold, increasing from 18.1% to 32.1%. The move is seen as a practical calculation by the DNB, with President Olaf Sleijpen stating that gold stored in London can be deployed more quickly in a crisis.

London's position as the world's gold nerve center is solidified, with over $900 billion in physical gold transactions processed every week. The move by the DNB and the Bank of France to reposition their gold reserves away from American vaults suggests that central banks are preparing for scenarios where liquidity matters more than yield.
