Egypt Moves Forward on Grain Hub Near Suez Canal Amid Maritime Disruptions
Egypt is moving forward on a plan to create a grain hub near the Suez Canal, a project that could serve as a storage and distribution point for grain destined for markets in Africa and the Middle East.
The initiative was first proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in April 2026. Since then, Egypt has been discussing the plan with Russia, aiming to create a regional logistics center for grain trade and storage at Egyptian ports.
Egypt's Investment and Foreign Trade Minister Mohamed Farid Saleh stated that no specific implementation schedule has been determined for the project, but emphasized the increasing importance of developing grain storage and logistics capacity in Egypt due to disruptions to maritime transport.
The proposed hub would not only serve Russian supplies but also strengthen Egypt's role as a trade hub linking the Middle East, Africa, and other markets. The country is considering expanding the hub beyond storage and re-exports to include grain processing and the production of flour, pasta, vegetable oils, and feed.
