England's Drought-Risk Crops Threaten Food Prices
A recent analysis by Rebalance Earth reveals that most of England's staple crops are grown in areas already facing serious drought risk, raising concerns about grocery prices and the resilience of the country's food system.
The study found that 81% of England's supply is concentrated in regions under water stress, with 77% of wheat, 75% of barley, and 74% of oilseed rape grown in areas rated moderately to very highly at risk of drought.
Kirsty Wilman, Rebalance Earth's chief operating and financial officer, warned that drought can have far-reaching impacts on the economy, including lower yields, strained supply chains, and higher prices in shopping baskets.
