Europe's Grain Harvest Devastated by Heatwave and Drought
A severe heatwave and drought have devastated Europe's grain harvest, causing an estimated €3.2 billion loss in production. According to analysis by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), Europe's forecast grain production has been reduced by 16.7 million tonnes between June and September. The largest losses were seen in France, with a reduction of 5.8 million tonnes valued at €1.47 billion.
The heatwave affected wheat and maize crops at critical stages, disrupting kernel filling in wheat, pollination in maize, and contributing to a reduction in maize acreage. Continued heat and drought through July and August pushed the estimated economic loss substantially above an earlier assessment of €1.8 billion.
The ECIU's analysis also highlights the impact on other crops, including soybeans, potatoes, and sugar beets, which saw yields decline by 15%, 7%, and 11% respectively. Lower grass growth also affected livestock farms, adding to the pressure on European farmers.
