Fall Calf Marketing Expected to Bring Strong Returns for Beef Producers

Beef producers are in for another profitable season as calf prices rebound after summer volatility. According to Derrell Peel, a livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University Extension, fall calf marketing is expected to yield strong returns despite earlier market corrections. Tighter supplies and drought conditions have contributed to this trend, with calf prices showing signs of counterseasonal strength.

Feeder cattle supplies have been notably tight, down 11.9% year over year from June through mid-September. The September Cattle on Feed report revealed that August placements dropped 9.2% compared to last year, marking the lowest 12-month average since 1996. Feedlot inventories, though slightly up at 11.163 million head as of September 1, reflect slower marketing rates rather than increased cattle availability. Feedlots are marketing just 14.1% of cattle on feed monthly, down from the 30-year average of 16.3%.

The beef cow herd has continued to decline in 2026, with a 0.7% drop in inventory from the previous year. However, there are early signs of stabilization, including an 11.3% reduction in heifer slaughter and a 13.7% decrease in beef cow slaughter. While the herd may hold steady or see slight growth heading into 2027, significant expansion is not expected until later in the decade.

Despite these positive outlook, challenges remain. High production costs, driven by record diesel prices, elevated corn prices, and persistent drought, threaten to offset gains. Beef production is expected to fall by 4.5% for the year, keeping consumer prices high. However, cattle markets are anticipated to finish the year strong, with end-of-year recovery in feeder and fed prices.
