Ford Pledges Ontario Support for Northern Shield Pipeline

Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated that his province is willing to finance the proposed Northern Shield pipeline, which would transport up to 500,000 barrels of oil per day from Hardisty, Alberta to Sarnia, Ontario.

During a luncheon in Calgary on September 28, 2026, Ford referred to the project as 'nation-building' and argued that it is crucial for Canadian energy sovereignty. He emphasized that Canada must ensure its resources can reach customers around the world without relying on other nations.

The pipeline would provide an alternative route for Alberta crude, avoiding American soil due to current trade tensions between Canada and the US. Ford noted that Ontario won't cover the costs alone, expecting outside investors to join in.
