France Leads UN Effort to Reaffirm Freedom of Navigation in Strait of Hormuz Amid Escalating Tensions

France is working on a draft UN Security Council resolution to reaffirm the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The resolution, which is still in the drafting stage, aims to address the disruptions caused by Iran's actions in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway through which a fifth of the world's traded oil and gas transits, making it essential for global food and energy security. The resolution would recall the need to respect the Law of the Sea and support peaceful initiatives aimed at ensuring safe passage in the strait.

French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Donald Trump discussed the issue on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, where Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Tehran had presented a seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume talks on its nuclear program if the US meets certain conditions.
