The FTSE 100 index is expected to open higher on Wednesday, following renewed diplomatic contact between the US and Iran. The prospect of easing Middle East tensions has put pressure on energy prices, with Brent crude falling to around $98.49 a barrel.

US President Donald Trump described a three-hour meeting with Iranian representatives as productive, although significant differences remain. The Strait of Hormuz could reopen if US military pressure and restrictions are eased, Iran has indicated.

The UK Prime Minister is also using the UN General Assembly to push for international cooperation on artificial intelligence, which will be a priority during the UK's 2027 G20 presidency.
