LNG Industry's Restocking Efforts Meet Skepticism from Louisiana Fishermen
Fishermen in Louisiana's Calcasieu Lake region have expressed skepticism about the liquified natural gas (LNG) industry's efforts to boost local fisheries through restocking programs.
The release of 150,000 redfish on September 18 was funded in part by Cameron LNG and Sempra Infrastructure, companies operating large export terminals along the Calcasieu Ship Channel. The restocking cost around $6 per fish.
Fishermen argue that while the gesture is appreciated, more investment in marshland restoration is needed to support the survival and growth of young fish released as part of these efforts.
'They didn't have to, so we all appreciate it,' said Justin Lyons, a fishing guide from Cameron Parish. 'But although it's appreciated, we need more of it.'
