Germany Craves More Canadian LNG Amid Diversification Efforts

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has expressed his country's desire for more Canadian liquefied natural gas (LNG). In an interview, he stated that 'of course' there is a market for more Canadian LNG in Europe. This comes as Germany looks to diversify its energy supply due to the Russian war on Ukraine and concerns over supply chains being threatened.

Wadephul emphasized that Germany's need for gas is huge, with LNG being a very needed source. He also noted that there is space for Canada to work with Europe on renewable energy technology. The two countries have already signed an agreement in May to purchase one million tonnes per annum of LNG from Canada for up to 20 years.

Canada has one major LNG export terminal, LNG Canada, which began shipping gas in summer 2025. There are currently half a dozen other LNG export projects in the works, including an announcement expected next week on Phase 2 of the facility, which will double its production.
