Germany's Gas Storage Facilities at 57% Capacity Amid Diversification Efforts
Germany's gas storage facilities are currently at 57% capacity as of September 27. This is according to VNG, one of Germany's major gas importers, which claims it has diversified its supplier portfolio and can meet its obligations even in the event of a cold winter.
VNG CEO Ulf Heitmüller attributes the resilience of Germany's gas system to expanded access to liquefied natural gas (LNG) and an increase in the number of supply sources. The company has recently signed supply agreements with Azerbaijan and Algeria, following the disruption of Russian pipeline gas after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
As of September 27, EU gas storage facilities were at 70% capacity, slightly higher than Germany's level. Germany's gas storage capacity is among the largest in the world, and concerns have been raised about supply security in the event of a significantly colder winter.
