Global Energy Crisis Sparks Widespread Protests Amid US-Israeli War Against Iran
The US-Israeli war against Iran has caused widespread social unrest and strikes around the globe due to skyrocketing energy costs. The conflict, now in its seventh month, has led to a surge in oil prices, with Brent crude reaching over $109 per barrel. Gasoline prices have risen by approximately 39% since the war began on February 28, while diesel prices have hit an all-time average high of $6.31 per gallon.
Protests and strikes have been reported in several countries, including Syria, Guatemala, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. In Portugal, drivers staged a series of slow-moving convoys on major roads to protest diesel prices that have reached a record high of over $9 per gallon.
The war has had a devastating impact on the working class, with billions of people struggling to afford basic necessities due to rising energy costs. Brown University researchers estimate that the war has added $100 billion to US energy costs alone, or roughly $763 per household.
