Global Food Prices Hit Four-Year High Amid Ukraine War
Global food prices have hit a four-year high due to unfavorable weather conditions in Europe and Asia, as well as the ongoing war in Ukraine. The FAO Food Price Index rose to 133.3 points in August, its highest level since November 2022, but still 17% below the record peak of March 2022.
The index has been rising steadily over the past few months, driven by climate shocks, geopolitical tensions, and disrupted trade logistics. All categories of food prices increased in August, including grains, oils, sugar, meat, and dairy products.
The FAO attributed the increase to extreme heat in Europe affecting corn and sugar beet harvests, as well as concerns about palm oil and sugar production in Asia due to the expected El Niño. The war in Ukraine has also reduced grain shipments from the country.
