Global Food Prices Hit Near Four-Year Highs Amid Shipping Disruptions and Climate Shocks
Global food prices have reached their highest level in nearly four years, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO's Food Price Index averaged 136.0 points in September, up from a revised 134.0 points in August.
The increase is attributed to logistics bottlenecks and adverse weather concerns, including shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Black Sea, as well as climate shocks.
International sugar prices surged to an 18-month high due to fears surrounding a severe El Niño weather pattern, while wheat futures reached a three-year peak in early September amid conflict-related trade disruptions in the Black Sea.
