Global Food Prices Surge to Near Four-Year Highs
Global food prices have reached nearly four-year highs in September due to logistics disruptions and weather concerns, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The FAO's Food Price Index averaged 136.0 points, up from a revised 134.0 for August and the highest reading since November 2022.
Sugar prices have been pushed to an 18-month high due to fears of a severe El Nino weather pattern, while wheat futures reached a three-year peak early last month.
FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero warned that if sustained, these pressures will soon pass through to consumer food prices, especially in import-dependent countries.
