Gold Miners' Cash Flow Strategies Diverge as Prices Fluctuate
The gold mining sector has two standout performers in OceanaGold (TSX:OGC) and Torex Gold (TSX:TXG), both of which are generating significant cash flow. However, their approaches to converting revenue into free cash differ.
OceanaGold produced 138,800 ounces of gold in the second quarter of 2026, earning revenue of US$647.3 million at an average realized gold price of US$4,433 an ounce. Despite strong operating cash flow of US$313.6 million, free cash flow was only US$130.1 million due to heavy investment in growth projects.
Torex Gold, on the other hand, produced 96,297 ounces of gold equivalent (AuEq) in the second quarter, with a more efficient conversion rate of about 56% of operating cash flow into free cash flow. However, its costs have risen due to lower grades and higher reagent costs.
