Gold Price Slumps Amid Rising Rate Concerns and Bearish Technical Signals
The gold price has fallen below key moving averages, making $4,200 a crucial support level. Central banks have been buying gold at an elevated pace, with estimates suggesting they purchased 44 tonnes in July, exceeding the pre-2022 average by 158%. The data from Goldman Sachs shows that central bank purchases are increasing, with the three-month average climbing to around 91-95 tonnes.
The discrepancy between official figures and estimated purchases has sparked speculation about actual demand. Official central bank buying totaled 23 tonnes in July, which is lower than Goldman Sachs' estimate of 44 tonnes. This discrepancy may indicate that actual demand is stronger than reported.
Despite the strong long-term demand, the gold price remains under pressure due to weak short-term price action and rising rate concerns. The technical signals remain bearish, with the gold price trading below its 200-day average and printing lower highs and lower lows since peaking near $5,598 earlier in 2026.
Analysts are cautious about the market's technical picture, with some indicators showing oversold readings that could lead to a rebound. However, if support levels fail, the outlook becomes more bearish, with potential targets at $4,000 and $3,845.
