Gold Rallies on Central Bank Buying and Macro Shifts

Gold prices have been on a multi-year bull run, driven by central bank buying and macroeconomic shifts. The trend began to strengthen in 2022, when Russia's foreign-exchange reserves were frozen, raising concerns about traditional reserve assets. This led some central banks to diversify their holdings with gold, which carries no counterparty risk.

The rally gained momentum in 2024, as gold prices regularly hit record levels due to strong central bank purchases and increasing geopolitical uncertainties. Despite the lack of conventional drivers, gold continued to appreciate, driven by a change in market dynamics.

By 2026, the trend had become more pronounced, with over 50 record highs for gold. The metal rose by more than 60% in returns, according to the World Gold Council. Central bank buying, investment demand, and monetary policy expectations continued to drive the trend.

The Indian market was also affected by foreign investment movements in stocks, which created uncertainty and motivated investors to buy gold. The weakness of the Indian rupee against the dollar made gold more expensive for importers, despite fluctuations in international prices.
