Guyana Tops Global GDP Growth Since 1990, Led by Asian Economies
According to data from the World Bank, Guyana has experienced the fastest growth in real GDP per capita since 1990, driven by its recent oil boom. The country's economy has seen a staggering 1,549% increase in real GDP per capita over this period, surpassing every other nation on the list. This remarkable growth is largely attributed to the discovery of offshore oil reserves in 2019 and the subsequent production of approximately 225 million barrels by 2024.
Asia dominates the top 25 fastest-growing economies, with China ranking second after Guyana. The Asian continent's rapid industrialization and trade expansion have contributed significantly to its economic growth over the decades. Countries like Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, and South Korea also feature prominently in the list, highlighting the region's remarkable progress.
In contrast, the United States ranks 88th globally, with a real GDP per capita increase of 73% between 1990 and 2025. The country's productivity growth has been a key factor behind its economic performance over this period, outpacing many other advanced economies.
