Houthis Escalate Attacks on Saudi-Backed Forces in Yemen
The Iran-backed Houthi forces have escalated their attacks on Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces since July, marking an end to a years-long truce. The group has declared a maritime blockade and targeted Saudi ships, aiming to disrupt Saudi oil exports. To counter these attacks, the head of Yemen's governing body called for a general mobilisation.
Yemen's civil war began in 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to step in and shore up the government. The Houthi forces have controlled much of northern and western Yemen since the 1990s.
Recently, the military chiefs of staff from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan held talks on how to support Riyadh as it faces increased attacks from the Houthis.
