India Expands Food Export Reach to Greece and Canada
India's food exports have taken another step forward as one tonne of makhana from Purnea, Bihar, made its way to Greece. This export is significant not only because it marks a new market for Indian food items but also because India is the global leader in Makhana production.
Bihar contributes around 80-85% of the country's total makhana production, with cultivation spanning over 35,000 hectares across 10 districts. The sector receives technical support from Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, and ICAR-National Research Centre for Makhana, Darbhanga.
On a separate note, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the export of frozen food products from Sonipat, Haryana, to Canada. The exported items included green peas, mixed vegetables, sweet corn, and samosas. According to Goyal, this is a significant step towards connecting farmers with the global value chain and achieving better prices for their produce.
