Indian Oil Approves ₹2,448 Crore Gas Pipeline Linking Kerala and Tamil Nadu
Indian Oil has approved a major gas pipeline project that will link Kochi in Kerala to Kanyakumari and Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu. The ₹2,448.70 crore pipeline, stretching 424.65 km, is designed to carry up to 6.84 million metric standard cubic meters of natural gas per day.
The project includes common carrier capacity, allowing third-party access and making it a shared backbone for southern gas demand and wider industrial use. This feature can improve utilisation, encourage more market participants to connect, and support downstream industrial demand in regions where gas availability has been inconsistent.
The pipeline will run from Kochi to Thoothukudi, passing through Kanyakumari, filling a gap in India's gas grid and altering how industrial clusters, fertiliser units, power plants, and city gas distributors in the region source fuel over time.
