Iranian Oil Minister Resigns Amid Declining Production and U.S. Sanctions
Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad has stepped down from his position, with President Masoud Pezeshkian accepting his resignation. Seyyed Mehdi Tabatabaei, deputy for communications at the Iranian president’s office, confirmed that Paknejad had previously submitted his resignation for personal reasons, but it was only accepted on Sunday.
Following Paknejad’s departure, Pezeshkian appointed Hamid Bovard as the acting head of Iran’s Oil Ministry. Bovard previously served as the managing director of the National Iranian Oil Company.
The leadership change occurs amid significant challenges for Iran’s oil sector, including declining production and exports due to the ongoing war in the Middle East and U.S. sanctions. U.S. officials have claimed that a naval blockade has effectively reduced Iran’s oil revenues to zero.
