LNG Boom Wreaks Havoc on Louisiana Fishing Town
The town of Cameron in Louisiana is facing an economic crisis due to the construction of two liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants by Venture Global. The company has a permit from the Department of Energy to export over 640 billion cubic feet of LNG per year, with the first plant already operational and the second under construction.
The influx of temporary workers for the project has led to overcrowding in RV parks and a strain on local resources. Local fishermen, who have made their living off the Gulf of Mexico for generations, are struggling to make ends meet due to declining catches and increased costs.
Commercial fisherman Brian DeBarge stated that 'I just don't know how much these people think we can take,' referring to the impact of the LNG plants on the community. The fishermen feel they have been left out of conversations about the future of the coastline and their concerns are not being heard.
