Logistics Challenges Plague Global Energy Market

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently emphasized that there is no global energy shortage. He stated that the world has an abundance of energy, but the real challenge lies in transporting it. According to Puri, around 104 million barrels of crude oil are available every day, while global consumption stands at about 94 million barrels.

The minister highlighted the significance of logistics and distribution in addressing the energy crisis. He noted that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have affected 40% of energy movement, particularly for countries like India that rely on imports from West Asia. Puri acknowledged that navigating these challenges has been a difficult task, but asserted that India has so far managed to insulate itself from the turbulence.

To mitigate the risks associated with LPG supply, Puri emphasized the importance of domestic production and alternative sources. He announced plans to launch the GOBARdhan scheme on October 1, which aims to convert cattle dung, crop residue, and municipal organic waste into compressed biogas (CBG) and organic manure.

The government has implemented several measures to ensure energy availability and affordability, including three excise cuts and providing financial support to public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs). Puri emphasized that India's strong economic performance has led to a growing demand for energy, which poses significant challenges to the petroleum sector. The minister expressed confidence that India would navigate these challenges effectively.
