Oil Prices Dip as Europe Agrees to Tap Diesel Reserves
Crude oil futures declined on Friday after European leaders agreed to release diesel reserves in response to US President Donald Trump's request. This move aims to lower prices and reduce fuel imports from the US.
The Brent crude price settled at $102.25 a barrel, down 0.1%, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) finished at $91.11 a barrel, down 1.9%. For the week, Brent was up 0.1% with WTI 1.6% lower.
The decision to release diesel reserves comes after Trump had threatened to impose a ban on US diesel exports. EU countries agreed to France's proposal to release an additional 50 million barrels of diesel stockpiles, with International Energy Agency members also releasing 50 million barrels of crude oil.
According to Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank, the main stress in the energy market is no longer crude availability but rather refined product supply, constrained by reduced refinery capacity and output across the Middle East and Russia.
