Oil Prices Surge to Six-Week Highs Amid US-Iran Tensions
Oil prices have surged to six-week highs as tensions between the US and Iran escalate. The WTI crude futures contract is trading at around $93.05 per barrel, up $2.04 or approximately 2.2% from Wednesday's official settlement of $91.01 on the NYMEX. This increase marks a decisive move higher for oil prices.
The Brent benchmark has also reached six-week highs, with prices trading near $97.39 according to Reuters, although there is some discrepancy in the available data feeds. The November contract is priced around $95.48 on TradingView's ICE contract table, but this may reflect differing timestamps or contract-data handling.
The main driver behind these price increases remains the escalating US-Iran conflict and deteriorating shipping conditions through the Strait of Hormuz. Only six vessels were reported crossing the strait on Wednesday, and Iran has expanded its blacklist of ships deemed non-compliant with potential fines or detention.
