ONGC Taps Deepwater Potential in Mahanadi Basin
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has embarked on its first deepwater exploratory well in the Mahanadi basin, a key project aimed at tapping into India's offshore hydrocarbon potential. This move is part of the government's 'Samudra Manthan' mission to unlock reserves in challenging deep and ultra-deepwater zones.
The MN-DW18-1-H-D drilling site is located 23 nautical miles from the earlier Konark discovery, with ONGC leveraging its DeepX centre in Mumbai to coordinate efforts. By centralizing geoscientific data and advanced interpretation technologies, the company aims to improve its success rate in finding commercially viable oil and gas deposits.
Deepwater exploration is a capital-intensive activity, involving high costs and technical risks, including drilling delays or high expenses that can impact short-term profit margins. ONGC's strategy is to offset natural decline in production from mature fields by tapping into new areas, with the ability to convert exploratory wells into producing assets crucial for long-term financial health.
