Petrol Prices Could Have Hit Rs 125/Litre Without Ethanol Blending, Says Govt
The Indian government has revealed that without ethanol blending, petrol prices in Delhi could have reached as high as Rs 125 per litre during the recent West Asian crisis.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, when the global crude oil price surged, the projected retail price of petrol without ethanol blending would have been around Rs 125 per litre.
However, thanks to the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme, consumers paid only Rs 94.77 per litre, with 20% of every litre comprising domestically produced ethanol procured at stable, pre-agreed prices.
The ministry highlighted that this savings demonstrates the role of ethanol blending in strengthening India's energy security while reducing dependence on imported crude oil and keeping a larger share of the country's fuel expenditure within the domestic economy.
