QatarEnergy Halts LNG Deliveries to Asia Amid Strait of Hormuz Disruptions
QatarEnergy has halted LNG deliveries to Bangladesh until November due to ongoing disruptions in the region. The company, which had initially issued force majeure notices in April, extended these notices on Monday for its Asian clients, including Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is preventing Qatar from shipping liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Asia. This has caused a severe blow to Qatar's economy, with LNG exports plummeting by 96 percent through August. Neighboring Gulf oil exporters have managed to navigate around the blockade to secretly ship crude.
Italian utility Edison, which receives LNG from QatarEnergy under a 25-year contract, has been affected by the halt in deliveries. The company has replaced some of the missing cargoes with supplies from American providers and has disclosed that QatarEnergy will cancel six more LNG cargoes, bringing the total undelivered shipments to 35.
The winter heating season is approaching, and European buyers must secure alternative energy sources to refill their gas storage inventories. This urgent demand will drive international gas prices even higher as market competition intensifies for limited global gas supplies.
