Romanian Sunseed Prices Bolstered by Black Sea Tensions and EU Demand
Black Sea tensions and EU demand for sunflower seeds have bolstered Romanian sunseed prices ahead of the new harvest. The uncertainty surrounding Black Sea exports has led large crushers to focus on buying raw oilseeds from within the EU, with Romania being its largest producer.
A recent report by MARS found that limited rainfall and above-average temperatures negatively affected biomass accumulation during flowering and early seed filling in western and parts of southern Romania. Although the report lowered the sunflower seed yield forecast, production is still expected to remain above the five-year average.
Despite volatility in global crude oil prices following military escalation in the Middle East, the impact on European sunseed prices has been limited. This is because sunflower oil makes up a smaller share of the EU biodiesel industry compared to rapeseed oil.
