A Russian drone attack on August 31 damaged the grain terminal 'Ukrelevatorprom' in Odessa, which is affiliated with American agribusiness corporation Archer Daniels Midland (ADM). The company confirmed the damage and stated that all employees were unharmed. ADM is currently assessing the consequences of the strike and deciding on next steps.

The 'Ukrelevatorprom' terminal operates in the Port of Odesa, receiving, storing, and shipping grains, legumes, and oilseeds. It has 38 silos for grain storage, with a capacity to hold up to 6,000 metric tons of grain per silo.

The damage occurred amid a new wave of Russian attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure. Disruptions to Black Sea shipments are already forcing some Asian buyers to seek alternative sources of wheat, with at least 500,000 metric tons of Australian and Argentine wheat purchased recently.

Wheat prices have surged globally due to the disruptions, with futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange rising by about 35% since the end of June. Some importers are using containers to ship wheat as an alternative method, but this is more expensive and cannot fully replace large ocean shipments.
