Russia's Vostok Oil Exports Begin Amid Arctic Growth Ambitions

Russia has started commercial oil exports from its massive Vostok Oil project in the Arctic, a key development for Moscow as it seeks to boost crude production after years of delays and sanctions. The launch comes as Russia looks for new sources of growth following the US shale boom, which propelled the US past Russia to become the world's largest crude producer.

The Vostok Oil project has been billed as capable of producing up to 2 million barrels per day (bpd), or around 2% of global oil supply. However, initial exports are far below this target, averaging about 150,000 bpd this year, mainly supplied from Rosneft's mature Vankor fields.

Rosneft plans to increase exports to around 600,000 bpd by the second half of 2027 and reach 1 million bpd by 2030. The company said that amid growing volatility, the development of the Vostok Oil project will help stabilise global energy markets.
