Saudi Arabia Backs Iraqi Sovereignty Amid Pipeline Attack Tensions
Saudi Arabia has expressed its support for Iraq's sovereignty and security following drone strikes that targeted the East-West Pipeline in Saudi Arabia. The pipeline, which crosses Saudi Arabia from eastern oil facilities to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, was attacked on September 11. Saudi authorities said several drones launched from Iraqi territory targeted sections of the pipeline in the Riyadh and Madinah regions, causing injuries and damage.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan stated that Saudi Arabia supports Iraq's sovereignty and security while stressing that Iraqi territory must not be used as a launch point for attacks on neighboring countries. He emphasized that the decision not to retaliate was intended to support the Iraqi government's efforts to prevent further attacks from Iraqi territory against Saudi Arabia and other neighboring countries.
Riyadh has said it retains the right to take measures necessary to protect its sovereignty, security, infrastructure, and citizens. The incident has intensified pressure on Baghdad to restrain non-state armed groups and maintain control over its territory, while preserving relations with Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the United States.
