Saudi Arabia's Energy Pivot Under Threat as Red Sea Escalations Intensify

Saudi Arabia's energy pivot has encountered a new threat in the Red Sea, where recent escalations have highlighted the region's growing importance for global oil trade. The kingdom's strategic response to past tensions has shifted its dependence from the Strait of Hormuz to its Red Sea terminal at Yanbu, which now loads around 80 million metric tons of crude oil per year.

The numbers demonstrate the scale of this transformation: between January and July 2026, Yanbu exported almost 588 million barrels, a four-fold increase compared to pre-crisis levels. The East-West Pipeline has become crucial in bypassing Hormuz, with Saudi Arabia directing 70% of its crude oil exports through Yanbu towards China, India, and east Asia.

However, this shift has inadvertently increased the strategic importance of the Red Sea, making it a critical chokepoint for global oil supply chains. The Houthis' latest declaration that vessels calling at Saudi ports could become legitimate targets raises uncertainty among shipping operators, insurers, and charterers, leading to rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope and additional costs per transit.
