Saudi Arabia's Oil-Export Network Faces Critical Test Amid Pipeline Attacks

Saudi Arabia's oil-export network is facing a crucial test as attacks on its infrastructure and regional instability threaten to disrupt crude supplies. The East-West Pipeline, which connects production facilities in eastern Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea coast, was targeted by Houthi attacks last week, disrupting parts of the system and affecting crude-loading and export operations.

The pipeline is a critical component of Saudi Arabia's oil export infrastructure, carrying between four million and five million barrels per day. Its strategic value lies in its ability to move large volumes of crude to the Red Sea without passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The targeting of the pumping stations exposed a key point of vulnerability in the network that gives Saudi Arabia flexibility over how and where it exports its crude.

The disruption has already affected several European refineries, which are moving to secure alternative sources of crude. Aramco's decision to notify some European refineries that it cannot fulfill their scheduled shipments for October highlights the growing vulnerability of the kingdom's export infrastructure. The implications extend beyond individual shipments and could affect global oil prices, supply security, and major markets' ability to absorb shocks originating in the Middle East.

The East-West Pipeline is just one of three strategic routes connecting Saudi Arabia's production fields to global markets, along with the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb. All three routes are now facing varying degrees of security and geopolitical pressure, making it increasingly difficult for Aramco to maintain reliable crude supplies.
