South Africa's LNG Regasification Facility Takes Shape at Port of Ngqura
The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has signed a 25-year terminal operator agreement with Ukwanda LNG, a strategic joint venture between Tamasa Energy Group and the Strategic Fuel Fund. This partnership aims to strengthen South Africa's energy security by advancing strategic gas infrastructure required to stabilize national electricity supply.
The project includes the development of an onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification facility at the deepwater Port of Ngqura in Eastern Cape, South Africa. The facility will provide critical fuel infrastructure to support South Africa's gas-to-power plans, including a 3,000 MW gas-to-power allocation.
The project is expected to create more than 500 jobs during the construction period, which will last about 36 months, and 50 permanent jobs after construction. The estimated investment value of the project is approximately R22-billion, with TNPA also building a dedicated LNG berth valued at around R2-billion in parallel.
Full operationalization of the facility is targeted for 2035, with the infrastructure intended to support the production of about 3,500 MW of electricity within the Coega Special Economic Zone.
