Tanker Strikes Escalate Tensions Between Iran and the US
At least two tankers were struck in the Middle East over the weekend, according to reports from the UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre. The incidents occurred near Oman and Iran, with one tanker being hit by an unknown projectile four nautical miles east of Oman on Saturday. Another tanker was reported as being similarly struck Sunday in the Strait of Hormuz, causing damage to its engine room.
The attacks come as tensions between Iran and the US continue to escalate, with Tehran reiterating its position that the Strait of Hormuz will not reopen unless its conditions for ending the war are met. These conditions include a halt to US 'acts of aggression,' an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, and the release of Iranian assets.
The situation has driven energy prices higher in recent weeks, with Brent crude futures closing at $102.25 per barrel on Friday, down 6 cents from Thursday's close. The ongoing attacks have raised concerns about a further escalation in the conflict.
Bader Al-Saif, founding president of Al-Saif Consulting, told CNBC that 'the situation is fluid and volatile...it's not a question of if, but when the conflict resumes full force.'
